The European Network for the Philosophy of Music (ENPM) invites submissions of paper abstracts for its third conference, which will be hosted by the Faculty of Art Studies and the Institute of Musicology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. The conference is organized in partnership with the Poznań Musical Spring Festival, a yearly festival dedicated to contemporary music, which will take place concurrently with the conference.
The ENPM welcomes submissions on any topic in the philosophy of music. However, the ENPM encourages submissions focused on the topic of Centre and Periphery in the Philosophy of Music. Relations between the centre and the periphery can be explored across a wide range of contexts. For this reason, the three main thematic areas of the conference will focus on the following phenomena:
Artistic dimension:
- Musical authorship and distributed creativity.
- Human and non-human agency in musical creativity (animals, AI, etc.).
- Centre–periphery relations in musical genres and institutions (the establishment vs. outsiders).
- Centre–periphery distinctions within categories such as popular art and global music.
Cultural and historical dimension:
- New conceptualizations of musical geographies: shifting centres and peripheries.
- Pioneering practices and innovations in music and the philosophy of music in the context of cultural peripheries and global reception.
- Cultural and historical correspondences between centre and periphery in music.
- The concept of centre and periphery in relation to race, gender, cultural appropriation and different forms of aesthetic injustice as applied to music.
Cognitive dimension:
- Centre–periphery relations in the perception of music, musical listening and musical experience.
- The conceptualization of music via a centre–periphery image schema (e.g., metaphorical mapping, conceptual blending).
- Centre–periphery relations in the construction of musical meaning.
- Epistemic injustice as applied to musical creative and appreciative practices.
The confirmed keynote speakers for the conference are David Davies (McGill University) and Mihailo Antović (University of Niš). In collaboration with the Poznań Musical Spring Festival, the conference will feature a panel discussion with Festival artists addressing centre-periphery issues in musical practice. All conference speakers will also be guests of the Festival and will be able to freely attend some concerts. In addition, the program will include an informal concert performed by ENPM members, to promote community and showcase the musical talents and diversity of the ENPM members.
Accepted speakers will receive full membership to the ENPM. They will also be invited to join the ENPM Plenary Assembly taking place during the conference. There will be no conference fee for both speakers and attendees.
